New ideas...

For my casing project I have once again revamped my entire project!

I am staying away with my earlier theme because I feel that it might just be too abstract of a reference, and it doesn't really match with my previous ideas.  So I'm going back to hearts, but I am adding Ricky and Lucy reaching down to try and take a lipstick.  The shelving is going to be the same as before.

I might turn the heart on it's side and I'm still contemplating on the materials to construct the characters with, my top choices are clay or chipboard but I'm leaning more towards the chipboard.

Display Project

For this week, I decided to completely scrap all of my old ideas and try some new ones.  My favorite idea that I came up with was to make the display case a take on the Tropicana, the nightclub that Ricky, Lucy's husband was a band leader, and a frequent setting for the show.  All of the other ideas that I came up with that were associated with I Love Lucy I felt were too campy or kitschy to be selling make up, I just hope this reference isn't too obscure.

What I want to do is make a stand alone unit with three shelves on it that extend across the top where the lipstick can be held, and then I just added the two palm trees on the side and the writing to keep with the Cuban nightclub theme that the Tropicana has.  My biggest concern is that the theme I chose might not be strong enough, or it might not be obvious enough or be close enough to my packaging.

This is how I plan on placing the lipsticks in the shelves, so the whole tube sits out of sight except the big heart at the top.  This way, when they are all put in the display it will just look like a strip of hearts.

I also don't know if I want to add different colors to this, or make it all one color (probably black or white)

Updates

For my display project, I am definitely having a hard time trying to find inspiration while sticking with my theme.  I tried to use the same prints and motifs as before and came up with this box that would display three lipsticks (where the purple squares are) and the box would be deep enough that only the heart on the packaged lipstick would stick through.

However, I think that this piece remains flat and uninspired so I am likely to completely change it for my next model.

Back to the drawing board!

Project 2

For my second project I had a lot of problems with creating an package that I felt would stand out as lipstick packaging because I knew that it would have to be on the smaller side.  I also knew that I wanted it to be something to stick with my theme of "I Love Lipstick" and just that fact that I think that makeup packaging is something that you can be really out there and fun with.

Some problems I had when making this was being able to get the chipboard strong enough to lift the lipstick up when you pull up the heart (and also making the heart sturdy enough that it didn't pull apart when pulling it).  I solved this with using glueing layers of  chipboards together to make it sturdier.  My biggest problem, however, was cutting the heart, as I learned that curves are quite hard to do with chipboard.

Updates

My directions for my first two projects, the postcard and branding, went in completely separate directions.  My product was cosmetics and immediately I knew I wanted to do lipstick.  Lipstick is often the boldest thing on a persons face and I knew there would be a lot to do with it.

For something as small as the postcard I knew I wanted to keep my color palette limited to pretty much just reds, and I had toyed around with a lot of ideas on how to portray it effectively, while still having a strong design.  I knew that on such a small postcard I did not really want to have a lot going on and I also was pretty confident that I wanted to do the classic lipstick kiss print that is familiar to everyone.  It's so iconic and simple that I knew it was what I wanted to focus on.

Red I thought was an obvious choice and I tried using different shades, but with the lines being so thin it was hard to tell the reds apart very well so it kind of looked messy.  But I knew just one shade looked rather boring so I added in the black lips to make it more interesting but in retrospect I wonder if all black lips with one red pair would have been better?  Or if maybe I had colored in a pair of lips or something like that it could have been more effective.

For the branding project I immediately knew I wanted to do something vintage, and so I thought of doing a play with the old I Love Lucy promotional cartoons of Ricky and Lucy.  I originally just had the two of them together with "I Love Lipstick" in the heart replacing the usual "I Love Lucy".  Upon suggestion from someone in my small group crits, I added a little kiss mark over Ricky's cheek, which I liked a lot because it sort of told a story and also pushed that it was lipstick that I was trying to show off here.

I felt there was a lot of white space so I added a red border but black may have been a wiser choice?  It also appears to me that everything looks a bit tilted so I should have spent more time measuring.
